Perspex Pendant Light

This perspex pendant light looks amazing, I love the way the warm glow of the light graduates through the separate sheets of acrylic. Looking at the light from different angles gives different light effects and colours. A very simple construction, consisting of multiple squares of acrylic with the centre cut out to accommodate the lamp/bulb, attached to each other with four spacers, one in each corner. This example called Shimmer is designed by Timothy Ben, made from 5 different colours of acrylic sheet and available in different colours and sizes. The colour options are only restricted by the variety of coloured acrylic sheet available, either using a single colour or multiple colours in the same lamp. It would even be possible to produce this so the panels could be interchangeable, giving different lighting effects as required. A really great product, giving us ideas for the future.

Tetris blocks Acrylic Lamp

This fun lamp in the shape of Tetris blocks consists of seven separate pieces, when they are placed together they light up. A very clever idea, if you feel like a change or just a play you can move the pieces to fit together some other way. Made from five different colours of translucent acrylic, the simple shapes are very easy to produce. They’re probably formed from 5mm or 3mm thick acrylic, made into 3D shapes by adding one box width as the depth. The actual lighting of the units is the star of the show here, I’m not sure exactly how they connect to each other electrically, it’s probably a low voltage system and every piece has some sort of conductor at each end. Some more investigation into the workings of this piece is in order I think. The guys from Paladone have done a great job, this type of fun lighting is certainly food for thought for the future. After all the future’s bright….. or so I keep getting told!

Acrylic See Through Seating Area

This entire seating area is made from translucent aqua acrylic. Each piece is different but when put together they are most definitely a set. There are some similarities between the pieces, the height, angle and depth of the seats are the same but after that they are all individual. Some have armrests and backs, some have just backs, they look like they would fit together if you turned them around or upside down like a game of Tetris. I love the fact it’s been made from see-through acrylic although this makes the assembly more challenging. The slightest of errors in any of the angles or any solvent glue runs would stick out like a sore thumb. I don’t think they were going for comfort when this was designed, it really needs to have some seat cushions, this would of course detract from the effect of being made from completely see-through material. This type of project is the ideal job for our extremely skilled team of fabricators to scratch their heads over. Designed by Morph for Tom Dixon.

Steel and Acrylic Chair

Ultra-modern seat design, made from two big slabs of acrylic which form the legs and sides of the chair, the series of rods which form the back and seat join them together. This design is obviously just a picture so has probably not been produced as yet, of the details are unclear, how are the rods fixed in the holes? If we were producing such a piece, for the sides we would use 40 or 50mm thick acrylic, polished all round and probably 10mm diameter stainless steel rods for the seat and back. These would need threads cut at either end, to fix each side of the acrylic sides with a stainless steel nut. A very simple design which looks great – not sure it’s built for comfort though!

Clearly Modern Sign

Being a fairly new company we need to get noticed fast and our customers need to know where we are, so we’ve enrolled the help of our good friends at switchsigns.co.uk to put up a sign for us. From the very first time we made contact Andy and Rhys were brilliant, decided to go for an illuminated sign, to make us stand out more. As you can see from the pictures work is underway!

Turn The Furniture Into The Light!

A simple but effective way of brightening up any room, turn the furniture into the light! The options for this are endless – shown here in blue but it could be bright white, red or green as static colours to suit your decor or company theme. A colour changing lights pack is also available which goes through the whole spectrum, either flashing from colour to colour or a slow fade, changing the mood of any room. Made from frosted opal acrylic as we would any light box or plinth, this is a very simply constructed piece made from basic square shapes, it is just brought alive when lit. For comfort it has an upholstered cushion seat and separate back. LED lighting already features in some of our furniture range and plays a big part in a lot of our bespoke projects, the future’s bright.

Home Office Designer Desks

How simple can a desk be? Not much more than this, just two legs and a top moulded into one piece. The lines look so clean, up, over and down, only breaking for the foot detail. I think white really suits this piece but it could be made from coloured acrylic, either a single colour or a mixture? Maybe two tone would work? It certainly would be possible to make bespoke for any customer’s colour scheme. This version is probably made from mdf, spray painted, lacquered then polished to a high gloss finish. I love the three hidden drawers, evenly spaced along the top without any handles to spoil the lines. The inside of the piece would be hollow allowing for cable management channels to travel through the body of the desk. The design looks so sleek, a stunning and practical edition to any home/office, we will be looking more at this type of design for the future.

Modern Designer Furniture

This design uses the different materials beautifully. I love the way the curved wooden base has two slots to take the frame of a chair, as it slides through the slots the seat becomes upright or reclines making this a very versatile statement piece. The base itself is probably made from MDF, clad in real wood veneer then given a very highly polished finish. The frame, which has a matching but opposite curve to the base, looks to be crafted from stainless steel or chrome tube again with a highly polished finish. To top it all off the individual upholstered bolsters sit perfectly spaced along the top of the frame, giving support and comfort as well as a fantastic look. We are currently looking at using all of these materials with acrylic to form some of our own pieces in the future – watch this space!

Crystal Clear Glue Joints

We’ve got a brand new glueing process that enables us to achieve crystal clear glue joints on large areas, something that we at Clearly Modern have always strived to achieve using our usual solvent glue.

This new method is going to give us greater versatility and let us create bigger and better acrylic furniture with perfect glue joints. After a few trial joints I started to get the hang of how it worked, it wasn’t long before the perfect job arrived to try it out for the first time. Our customer wanted a TV stand and after further discussions with them we decided not to go down our usual route with stainless steel bolts but to glue the piece together. Made from 50mm and 20mm clear acrylic it was a heavy piece of furniture. The glue joints attaching the shelves to the legs were the most difficult to get crystal clear, because the shelves had their corners cut out to let the leg in, so the glue surface was on two planes. The customer was very happy with the outcome and I’m looking forward to using this method more in the future.

Brightly Coloured Acrylic Tables

It cannot fail to catch your eye, the colours look fantastic, we will definitely be looking to include a bigger range of colours including fluorescents in our acrylic furniture designs in the future. Love the triangular shapes, from my experience i’ts not the easiest of angles to machine and if they are not quite right the gaps will look awful, these tables go further than that though not only do they have the 60 degree angles of a triangle they include 45 degree mitres on all 3 sides as well, making the construction very difficult to get perfect.

From the pictures it seems they managed to do a pretty good job.
